Kauai, 2001

A 10-day vacation at the Waimea Plantation Cottages on Kauaii in March 2001. I've divided the images into six slideshows based on the major activities of the week: the Cottages, the Alakai, Beaches, a Helicopter Tour, the Awa'awapuhi Trail, and Waimea Canyon.

All GPS locations are approximate (determined 13 years after the fact from image content, vague memories, and Google Earth).

Cameras used were a 2.5 MP Olympus C-2500L and a 1MP Sony DCR-PC100.

  • Waimea Plantation Cottages, 2001 : The Waimea Plantation Cottages are on the southwest shore of Kauaii well away from the more popular and upscale resorts found on the east end of the island. But, they are ideally situated for exploring the Waimea Canyon Area and enjoying the fabulous Polihale Beach.

  • Kalalau Valley & the Alakai, 2001 : On the first full day of the vacation I drove up route 550 to the end, photographed the Kalalau Valley, and took a hike through parts of the Alakai swamp in Kokee State Park.

  • Kauai Beaches, 2001 : On the 3rd and 4th days of the vacation, I it the beaches: my all-time favorite, Polihale Beach and a new one for me, Larsen Beach.

  • Kauai Helicopter Tour, 2001 : Also on the 4th day, I took a helicopter tour of the whole island. The weather was perfect. I only wish I had had my GPS aboard so that I could show you exactly where we went.

  • Awa'awapuhi Trail, 2001 : Six days into the vacation, I returned to the Kokee State Park and hiked the Awa'awapuhi Trail out to Lolo Vista and back.

  • Waimea Canyon, 2001 : There is a reason they call this the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. These images were taken on several visits to the area over the week and are presented in the order you would encounter the sights driving up highway 550 from Waimea.
