Maui & the Big Island, 1999

These are photos from my first trip to Maui in October, 1999. The trip was a mixture of business and pleasure: I spent the first four days on West Maui, then I flew to the Big Island for a week-long committee meeting, and then I returned to East Maui for another five days of sightseeing.

All photos were taken with a Kodak DC260 having a resolution of 1536x1024 pixels. It appears to me that the chip in the DC260 wasn't quite able to deliver its rated resolution, therefore all images have been resized such that their minimum dimension is only 960 pixels. All of the images have been geotagged, but in most cases the GPS coordinates are only approximations based on the content of the image and my recollection of events that transpired 15 years ago.

  • West Maui, October 1999 : These 190 images are from a 4-day stay at the Aston Kaanapali Shores Resort on West Maui.

During my stay I rode the Sugar Cane Train, visited Iao Valley, the Maui Ocean Center, Honokohau Bay and the Blowhole on Nakalele Point. The next day, I flew to Molokai and toured Kalaupapa National Historic Park. Then on the last day I took a Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tour of the whole Island before catching my flight to the Big Island.

  • The Big Island, October, 1999 : The international committee meeting was held at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island (Hawaii). The weekend before the meeting I explored Volcanoes National Park, spending Saturday night in Volcano, HI.

After the meeting I flew back to Maui for six more days, this time on Haleakala's shores.

  • Maui Hill, October, 1999 : The Aston Maui Hill is on the south end of Kihei at the base of Haleakala, the extinct volcano that forms the eastern half of Maui. This was my base of operations for the last part of this trip to Maui.

I spent a day exploring Haleakala and two days on the Hana Road. Images from those outings are in separate photosets of this collection.

The images here are from Makena and Kamaole beaches a short distance from the Maui Hill.

  • Haleakala, October, 1999 : One fine day, I spent five delightful hours at Haleakala National Park. It seemed that everywhere I looked, there was an image to be captured.

  • Hana Road, October, 1999 : I spent two days on the road to Hana while on Maui this stay. On the first day I got an early start and drove at a leisurely place as far as Waianapanapa State Park and stayed overnight at the Hanokalani Ranch adjacent to the park. On the second day I drove past Hana to Oheo Gulch, hiked to Waimoku Falls and then backtracked through Hana back to the Maui Hill.
