My Nephew's Wedding, 2005

My nephew's wedding was celebrated with both a Christian ceremony and a Hindu ceremony.

The Hindu marriage is a lifelong promise between a man and a women, taken in the presence of a sacred fire and assembly of family and friends as their witness. Of the four stages of life, Hindus believe that the most crucial and difficult one is that of the householder (the second stage of spiritual development). Indians regard marriage as a relationship between two families, rather than just between two persons.

The format of this ceremony was set more than 35 centuries ago, but continues to be followed with very few regional variations. The marriage ceremony is composed of various rituals and is performed in Sanskrit, which is the most ancient surviving language of the Indo-European language family.
